- Turn the engine off if it is running then open the hood of the car.
- Locate the air filter then remove the wing nut from the air filter.
- Remove the air filter; the carburetor will be visible as the part to which the filter was screwed.
- Find the 2 screws on the front of the carburetor ; these are used to adjust the air and fuel mixture.
- Restart the engine and let it warm to normal operating temperature ; you will know this by the sound of the engine or you can check the temperature gauge.
- Adjust 1 screw slowly clockwise , counting the number of turns , until the engine begins to run rough , sputter or die.
- Adjust the second screw in the same number of turns.(note:- both screws must be adjusted equally to achieve the correct mixture.)
- Turn both screws, 1 at a time, back out 1/4 to 1/2 turn at a time until the engine begins to run smoothly.
- Turn both screws counter-clockwise, 1 at a time, an additional 1/2 turn or until the engine begins to run rough again.
- Turn both screws clockwise again, 1 at a time, to the point at which the engine ran best then replace the air filter assembly.
- After you follow these steps, turn the engine on and let it idle or drive the car until it is warmed up.
- Turn the engine off and repeat the steps above to remove the air filter.
- Find the throttle cable and the idle adjustment screw attached to it.
- Restart the engine then turn the idle adjustment screw 1/2 turn to the right to tighten.
- Listen to the car's engine for sounds of roughness then wait for 30 seconds for the engine to adjust to the change.
- Continue to turn the idle adjustment screw 1/2 turn at a time until the engine runs smoothly then replace the air filter assembly.
finished article! goodbye
