Driving tips to get the most out of your fuel

Hello everyone!

The rising cost of fuel has made greater fuel efficiency of mind for drivers and car buyers. Natural Resources Canada has put together a guide to fuel consumption in 2011 to help Canadians to maximize their fuel efficiency and minimize fuel consumption.
Here are directions for driving and maintenance, as compiled by Natural Resources Canada, to help you save money and reduce the environmental impact of your vehicle. Don't forget to check the owner's manual as it will contain specific information on how to drive and maintain your vehicle for optimum performance and efficiency.

  • Reduce the speed. By decreasing the speed of 120 km/h to 100 km/h consumes about 20 percent less fuel. Slow down for driving safer and cleaner.
  • Don't drive aggressively. Hard acceleration and hard stops aggressive driving increase fuel consumption by up to 39 percent.
  • Continue to pull in traffic. Smooth and steady movement is more fuel-efficient than frequent starts and stops. You can save a lot of fuel by anticipating the traffic, maintaining a constant speed and coasting to stops.
  • Not least to no avail. If you're going to be stopped for more than 60 seconds – when parked – turn off the engine.
  • Lighten the load. Heavy items in your trunk and roof racks and ski decrease the aerodynamics of the vehicle and add weight, causing your vehicle to burn more fuel. Lighten the load by taking only what you need.
  • Cruise control. Use cruise control on dry highways, flat, clear, wide open to help maximize fuel efficiency while maintaining your speed.
  • Air conditioning. This causes vehicles to burn more fuel. Set the air conditioning only the required temperature for your comfort. In the city, roll down the Windows or open the vents to keep cool.
  • To make a long trip instead of several short trips. Taking short trips (less than 5 km) burns more fuel, because the engine and drive train don't reach their most efficient operating temperatures.
  • Leave your vehicle at home. Walk, bike, carpool or take public transit whenever possible.
